The Publisher's Perspective.

Guest post by Mary Hicks-National Poetry Month: Honoring Poets of Our Time

At Warren Publishing, we are proud to represent many authors who are making a difference in the world today through their inspirational poetry. In honor of National Poetry Month, I would like to recognize the youngest inaugural poet US history, Amanda Gorman. She has two books out right now called Change Sings and The Hill We Climb And Other Poems.

Change Sings is written as a children’s anthem to empower the next generation and embolden them to let their voices be heard in order to create change in the world. In The Hill We Climb And Other Poems, Gorman makes a declaration of healing for the nation and creates a sense of hope for the future in her inaugural poem, as well as inspiration through other poems she has compiled in this moving and powerful book.

Although only twenty-three years of age, Gorman has been making waves through her writing for many years. She uses words to create in such a way that inspires others to reflect, express, and ignite, which has caused many of the nation’s most powerful leaders to notice her. This first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate, Gorman is lighting the fire of change and hope in our world through the power of poetry!

Guest post by author Debra Blaine-Why do Writer's Write

4/8/2021

Why do writers write? It is always to tell a story, but why do we bother to tell that story in the first place? Sometimes the purpose is to entertain, sometimes the purpose is to impart information, sometimes it is to teach. And often, it is to do all three of these things. Stories give us the opportunity to engage our emotional centers, and then facts make a more lasting impression. People just learn better when we they’re having fun. Writers also write better when we are having fun ourselves.

I have been a practicing physician for thirty years and I wanted people to actually enjoy hearing my story, as horrifying as it is. I started writing my first novel CODE BLUE: The Other End of the Stethoscope, out of utter frustration with––and yes, anger at––our healthcare system. Most people have no idea what happens “on the other end of the stethoscope.” They have no idea that we physicians are caught between satisfying “customers” and fulfilling “productivity” measures. When patients become consumers, preyed upon by advertising gimmicks and incentives, they are given a whole different status. The priority of service is no longer to provide the best treatment, but to “keep the customer satisfied.” Being held accountable to productivity measures means we need to generate a minimum revenue pre-set by whichever corporate industry owns us. These are factors important to business, not to taking care of sick people.

I wanted my story to be something people would want to read. The problem of health care is a heavy subject, and there are so many issues in the news these days that are difficult to digest, that many people (including myself) have become numb to yet another crisis. So that’s not what we want to read. Give me a story that I can relax with and enjoy.

In CODE BLUE, I have tried to provide both relaxation and enjoyment. Within the global conspiracy the book presents, I hope you will root for the fictional protagonists and hiss at the villains as corruption and murder are woven together and threaten the lives of everyday, vulnerable patients. I hope you will wonder wistfully if an old love will be rekindled. And as you read their stories, you will also hear my story, and the story of how physicians and our patients are being swindled.

My goal is to reach not only my colleagues for whom this is more commiseration than education, but to gently engage the non-medical community in yet another arduous and uncomfortable modern day calamity.

I wanted to enjoy creating my own characters, giving them personalities and back stories, dreams and nightmares, because I needed to escape the reality in which I lived, even while I languished in its murk. That is the final reason why writers write. We write for ourselves––to entertain ourselves, to express ourselves, and to find our own catharsis.

Mindy Kuhn, owner of Warren Publishing, is thrilled to announce the launch of her second business. Kuhn, in conjunction with business partner, Shonali Thomas, will be opening Corks, Cooks, & Books, a unique, retail shop and wine bar in the late Spring of this year.  “I am so excited to offer our authors a home-base location where they will always be able to sell their books and participate in events,” Kuhn said.

Kuhn and gourmet chef Shonali Thomas of SplenDishes Kitchen are eager to entertain customers with a multi-dimensional infusion of charcuterie boards, snacks, wine and beer, cooking classes, and books. “Since Shonali is a gourmet chef, you know the food will be good, plus she’s from Napa Valley, California—so you know the wine will be well-thought-out!” said Kuhn.

Located in Rock Hill, South Carolina in the Charlotte-metro region, this new space will become home to a variety of cooking and reading associated products. The store will also benefit Warren Publishing authors by hosting an assortment of events including readings, signings, Q&As, and interviews.

“Corks, Cooks, & Books is another way to bring publishing full circle. It’s a great way for me, as a publisher, to get inside the book-buying industry from another angle,” added Kuhn.

“We haven’t forgotten our readers. A great selection of your favorite (and soon-to-be new favorite) titles will be included here. And we understand we’re still living in the age of COVID-19, which is why our outdoor patio is the perfect place to relax and have a drink.”

Corks, Cooks, & Books will be sure to inspire creativity and enjoyment as soon as you walk in the door. Please follow our Facebook page along with that of Corks, Cooks & Books for all of the great news!

'Tis the Season... for wearing hats

The holiday season is upon us once again. On a personal note, I LOVE this time of year. It is my very favorite season...mostly. I love watching Hallmark movies, visiting with family and friends, and baking—who are we kidding, eating—holiday cookies. The “mostly” part is because I find it stressful to shop for my family and friends. I tend to wait until the last minute to purchase my gifts because I shop incessantly in my effort to give the “perfect” present, and then worry that my friends may not like my carefully chosen gift. Honestly, I think I lose hair over it every year!

For this week’s blog, I wanted to give all of you the gift of stress-free gift selection (and retaining your lovely hair) and share with you some of our newest non-fiction books. You will surely find something that is a perfect fit for someone on your shopping list. (If not, I can suggest a great brand of hat!)

So Many choices: three standard publishing models

11/29/2018

I have always loved books. Of course I love to read them, but oddly enough, I just love the feeling of books. I love the smell of a freshly-printed book. I love the crack of the spine when you open them. I love the feeling of the pages as you flip through to the end. And, I love the business of books. I am lucky enough to be able to spend my days working with books, authors, and the amazing people who help to produce and support them.

When I speak to people about the business of books, I am often asked to describe the difference between self-publishing, hybrid, and traditional publishing models. Today I thought I would share this information with our blog-readers as well.

Self-publishing:
  • Author finances 100% of the book production process and is responsible for finding a professional editor, designer, illustrator (if applicable), marketing representative, etc. on their own
  • Author retains 100% of royalties from book sales
  • Author retains rights for the book
Potential Risks
  • Errors: Self-published books are infamous for containing typos; some are never edited, while others are edited poorly.
  • Unprofessional design or production: Just because a family member can draw an image for your cover (or edit your book) doesn’t mean they should. Truth be told, unprofessional design looks unprofessional and can hurt book sales. People will absolutely judge your book by its cover, so be sure to leave your design and illustration to the professionals.

Hybrid Publishing (the business model for Warren Publishing):
  • A cross between traditional and self-publishing
  • Requires a monetary investment from the author
  • Authors retain 100% of the rights to their books
  • Authors often have input into their editing, design, and marketing plans
  • True hybrid publishers are selective in their manuscript review and selection process and do not accept every manuscript submitted. (We accept less than 20% of manuscripts submitted to us).
  • Hybrid publishers ensure the final book is as polished and professional as possible.
  • Royalties are typically split 50/50 between the author and publisher. (Our authors receive 50% for books sold through the retail angle, and 100% royalties from those sold through their personal inventory.)
  • We often describe ourselves as “publishing partners” to our authors.
Traditional Publishing:
  • Think of your big-five publishing houses, Random House, Simon and Schuster, etc.
  • Most traditional publishers require a formal submission from a literary agent who typically takes a percentage of your advance and sometimes a cut of your royalties as well.
  • Traditional publishers own the rights to your book.
  • Traditional publishers may or may not offer an advance payment to the author. If they do, advances are typically only a few thousand dollars at most.
  • Authors capture less than 5% of royalties from book sales.
  • Traditional publishers control all aspects of editing, marketing, and design.
  • Traditionally published books may be in more bookstores, however, this doesn’t mean they will sell more. Due to limited budgets, traditional publishers often now require authors to market their own books.

In short, there is a publishing model for every author. What is your option?
