In honor of National Poetry Month, I would like to recognize the youngest inaugural poet US history, Amanda Gorman. She has two books out right now called Change Sings and The Hill We Climb And Other Poems. Change Sings is written as a children’s anthem to empower the next generation and embolden them to let their voices be heard in order to create change in the world. In The Hill We Climb And Other Poems, Gorman makes a declaration of healing for the nation and creates a sense of hope for the future in her inaugural poem, as well as inspiration through other poems she has compiled in this moving and powerful book. Although only twenty-three years of age, Gorman has been making waves through her writing for many years. She uses words to create in such a way that inspires others to reflect, express, and ignite, which has caused many of the nation’s most powerful leaders to notice her. This first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate, Gorman is lighting the fire of change and hope in our world through the power of poetry!

Why do writers write? It is always to tell a story, but why do we bother to tell that story in the first place? Sometimes the purpose is to entertain, sometimes the purpose is to impart information, sometimes it is to teach. And often, it is to do all three of these things. Stories give us the opportunity to engage our emotional centers, and then facts make a more lasting impression. People just learn better when we they’re having fun. Writers also write better when we are having fun ourselves. I have been a practicing physician for thirty years and I wanted people to actually enjoy hearing my story, as horrifying as it is. I started writing my first novel CODE BLUE: The Other End of the Stethoscope, out of utter frustration with––and yes, anger at––our healthcare system. Most people have no idea what happens “on the other end of the stethoscope.” They have no idea that we physicians are caught between satisfying “customers” and fulfilling “productivity” measures. When patients become consumers, preyed upon by advertising gimmicks and incentives, they are given a whole different status. The priority of service is no longer to provide the best treatment, but to “keep the customer satisfied.” Being held accountable to productivity measures means we need to generate a minimum revenue pre-set by whichever corporate industry owns us. These are factors important to business, not to taking care of sick people. I wanted my story to be something people would want to read. The problem of health care is a heavy subject, and there are so many issues in the news these days that are difficult to digest, that many people (including myself) have become numb to yet another crisis. So that’s not what we want to read. Give me a story that I can relax with and enjoy. In CODE BLUE, I have tried to provide both relaxation and enjoyment. Within the global conspiracy the book presents, I hope you will root for the fictional protagonists and hiss at the villains as corruption and murder are woven together and threaten the lives of everyday, vulnerable patients. I hope you will wonder wistfully if an old love will be rekindled. And as you read their stories, you will also hear my story, and the story of how physicians and our patients are being swindled. My goal is to reach not only my colleagues for whom this is more commiseration than education, but to gently engage the non-medical community in yet another arduous and uncomfortable modern day calamity. I wanted to enjoy creating my own characters, giving them personalities and back stories, dreams and nightmares, because I needed to escape the reality in which I lived, even while I languished in its murk. That is the final reason why writers write. We write for ourselves––to entertain ourselves, to express ourselves, and to find our own catharsis.  Mindy Kuhn, owner of Warren Publishing, is thrilled to announce the launch of her second business. Kuhn, in conjunction with business partner, Shonali Thomas, will be opening Corks, Cooks, & Books, a unique, retail shop and wine bar in the late Spring of this year. “I am so excited to offer our authors a home-base location where they will always be able to sell their books and participate in events,” Kuhn said.
Kuhn and gourmet chef Shonali Thomas of SplenDishes Kitchen are eager to entertain customers with a multi-dimensional infusion of charcuterie boards, snacks, wine and beer, cooking classes, and books. “Since Shonali is a gourmet chef, you know the food will be good, plus she’s from Napa Valley, California—so you know the wine will be well-thought-out!” said Kuhn. Located in Rock Hill, South Carolina in the Charlotte-metro region, this new space will become home to a variety of cooking and reading associated products. The store will also benefit Warren Publishing authors by hosting an assortment of events including readings, signings, Q&As, and interviews. “Corks, Cooks, & Books is another way to bring publishing full circle. It’s a great way for me, as a publisher, to get inside the book-buying industry from another angle,” added Kuhn. “We haven’t forgotten our readers. A great selection of your favorite (and soon-to-be new favorite) titles will be included here. And we understand we’re still living in the age of COVID-19, which is why our outdoor patio is the perfect place to relax and have a drink.” Corks, Cooks, & Books will be sure to inspire creativity and enjoyment as soon as you walk in the door.
